  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder (for dark chocolate layer)
  • ¼ cup melted dark chocolate

  • ¼ cup melted white chocolate
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 23 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and line three cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix until smooth.
  5. Split the batter into three bowls.
  6. Add cocoa powder and melted dark chocolate to the first portion. Stir.
  7. Add melted milk chocolate to the second portion and mix.
  8. Add melted white chocolate to the third portion and stir.
  9. Pour each batter into prepared pans and bake for 20–25 minutes. Let cool completely.
  10. Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Mix in heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt.
  11. Place the dark chocolate layer on a serving plate, spread with chocolate buttercream, and add the milk chocolate layer.
  12. Add another layer of chocolate buttercream and top with the white chocolate layer.
  13. Use remaining buttercream to frost the top and sides of the cake.
  14. Refrigerate for 30 minutes before serving to firm up the buttercream.
